The Challenge
Land's End and John O'Groats are traditionally seen as the most southerly and northerly points in the UK respectively. The total distance between these two points is approximately 850 miles.
Cycling the ‘End-to-End’ is well established and regarded as one of the ultimate UK endurance challenges. For Standing Up for those that can’t Alan is intending to ride a double ‘End-to-End’ Land’s End to John O’Groats to Land’s End (LEJOGLE), a total distance of approximately 1700 miles.
Whilst cycling this distance on a conventional bicycle is an extremely impressive achievement, what sets the ‘Standing Up’ challenge apart is that Alan will be riding a stand-up bike – Alan will literally be standing all the way. This unique challenge has never before been attempted.
However, and far more importantly, Stand Up For those that can’t is about more than just wandering up and down country for a couple of weeks. Alan will be riding this ridiculous distance in order to raise money for a number charities which hold personal relevance to Alan and his family. The charities the Stand Up Team have chosen to support are: Dementia UK, Cancer Research and the Stroke Association. Please show your support for the Stand Up challenge by making a donation. Details of how to make a donation to these charities are detailed on the ‘Charities’ section of this website. If you have a preferred alternative charity, you could simply use the Stand Up challenge as an excuse to make a donation to them. How about setting your own personal challenge and join Alan on parts of his ride?
If you are unable to make a charity donation, there are still a number of ways in which you can help. Full details are on the ‘Get Involved’ section of this website.

The Bike
Whilst stand up riding is physically more demanding than conventional cycling, it does offer one significant advantage – no risk of saddle sores!!
ElliptiGO
Alan has been riding the ElliptiGO for about six years. The ElliptiGO is a very good all-rounder. It cruises well, climbs well and the low impact, elliptical stride make it suitable as a cross trainer for running. The ElliptiGO is also a viable alternative to a conventional bicycle.
Alan is one of a small group of ElliptiGO riders who are pioneering the sport of long distance, multi-day stand up riding. In 2013, Alan became one of only two people to complete the prestigious London-Edinburgh-London (LEL) cycling event on a stand up elliptical bike. In 2015, Alan was part of a small group of ElliptiGO riders who successfully completed the internationally renowned Paris-Brest-Paris (PBP) cycling event.
